Slovenian mothers celebrate Mother's Day on March 25, which is dedicated to showing care, gratitude and recognition of mothers for their mission. Slovenia is the only one in the world that marks it today.
Mother's Day is linked to the Christian feast of the Annunciation, celebrated nine months before Christmas. Its roots also lie in the American women's social movement of the 19th century; it spread to Europe after the 1st World War.
After the Second World War, Mother's Day in Slovenia was overshadowed by Women's Day on 8 March. It returned to public life in the 90s, following Slovenian independence.
Being a mother is demanding
Mothers balance many roles: as individuals, partners, friends and daughters to their own parents. Calm and confidence matter when raising children.
A good mother knows how to look after herself. Feeling well herself helps her care for her children and partner.
Children need boundaries
We can thank mothers for the closeness, care and time they devote to us. The greeting should come from your relationship: remember a shared moment or say what you especially appreciate about mom. Every family has its own story, so personal words are more valuable than general judgments about what a mother should be.
