Why are flowers given for Valentine's Day?
Valentine's Day is celebrated every year February 14. For many, this is the time when they show their own affection through cards, flowers or chocolates. Most people know the story of Saint Valentine, but most don't know why flowers are sent on Valentine's Day.
In early In the 18th century, the Swedish king Charles 12. found himself in Isfahan, the city of poetry, gardens and Persian culture. Charles was a famous warrior, but he harbored a hidden romance. As he walked through the gardens there he discovered an ancient art - the language of flowers. In Persia, in addition to their beauty, flowers also conveyed messages, whispered secrets and conveyed emotions.
The king, separated from his countess in Sweden due to political tensions, was unable to send messages. With the help of a Persian court poet, it is made a bouquet and shipped via trusted dealers. The arrangement included:
- Red tulips 🌷 – a declaration of love
- Hyacinths 🌿 – regret and longing
- Blue irises 💙 – a message of hope
- Myrtle 🌿 – a promise of fidelity
- Fragrant Damask roses 🌹 – undying passion
When the bouquet arrived at the countess in Stockholm, she understood that the flowers were not only a gift, but encrypted letter of longing. Charles eventually returned to Sweden where he brought Persian art floriography – language of flowers or the use of specific flowers and their combinations to express the hidden meanings and emotions of an individual.
While he remained a warrior at heart, he did spread the tradition of sending flowers as coded messages among the Swedish nobility, which later influenced the European fascination with the Victorian language of flowers.
