What is International Women's Day, and where did it originate?<\/p>\n

The occasion commemorates the movement for women's rights. It was first celebrated in 1909 in the United States, in New York. The date of 8 March has remained to this day.<\/p>\n

Two years later, an international conference declared it a worldwide observance. It also began to be celebrated in the Soviet Union after 1917, when women gained the right to vote.<\/p>\n

It all started with us in the year 1897<\/strong>when it started to come out women's magazine Slovenka<\/strong>. The fight for equality was followed by the founding of the first women's association a year later.<\/p>\n

Shortly after that we also got first Slovenian woman with a doctorate<\/strong>. That was her Marija Urbas<\/strong>, who was engaged in the field of philosophy.<\/p>\n

The Slovenian People's Party was the first political body to hide the key political difference between men and women. They acquired these in 1920 the right to vote<\/strong> in municipal elections, 1945<\/strong> on the national level.<\/p>\n

The seventies were also important: women gained the right to make decisions about having children and terminating a pregnancy.<\/p>\n
